PM Narendra Modi to Distribute Land Deeds to Assam Tea Garden Workers

Prime Minister Narendra Modi is set to distribute land deeds to thousands of tea garden workers in Assam during his visit to the state on March 13. The move is being seen as a historic step aimed at improving the lives of tea plantation workers who have lived and worked in the region for generations without owning land.

According to officials, the Prime Minister will launch the land rights distribution programme during his visit to Guwahati. Under this initiative, eligible tea garden workers will receive land pattas (ownership certificates), giving them legal rights to the land where they have lived for decades. For many families, this will be the first time they will officially own the land on which their homes stand.

Tea garden workers in Assam are mostly descendants of labourers who were brought to the region by British planters nearly 200 years ago to work in tea plantations. For generations, these workers lived in labour lines inside tea estates but did not have legal ownership of the land. As a result, many families faced uncertainty about their housing and long-term security.

The distribution of land deeds aims to change this situation by providing permanent residential rights to the tea garden community. The programme is expected to benefit thousands of workers across the state and is part of a larger effort to improve the social and economic conditions of the tea tribe community.

During his two-day visit, the Prime Minister is also expected to inaugurate and lay the foundation for several development projects worth over ₹10,000 crore in Assam. These projects include infrastructure and connectivity initiatives that are expected to support economic growth in the region.

Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma has described the land rights programme as a historic initiative for tea workers who have contributed significantly to Assam’s tea industry for generations. The government hopes that granting land ownership will provide greater security, dignity, and stability to tea garden families.
