About - Luxmi Tea Company Pvt Ltd

Founded in 1912 by P.C. Chatterjee as a bold act of self-reliance against British colonial monopoly, Luxmi Tea Company Pvt Ltd (now widely known as Luxmi Estates) has transformed into one of the world’s most sophisticated tea producers. From its humble origins on a single tract of land in Tripura, the company has grown under the stewardship of the Chatterjee family to manage a global empire of 25 estates spanning over 50,000 acres across India and Africa. As of early 2026, the group has solidified its position as a high-value market leader, reporting a consolidated revenue of approximately ₹1,640 crore for the 2024-25 fiscal year.

The company’s production philosophy is defined by “terroir-led” farming, producing roughly 25 to 30 million kilograms of tea annually. In India, its 13 flagship Assam estates, such as Addabarie and Dirai, are renowned for their “forest-nurtured” teas, where wildlife corridors are maintained to preserve soil microbial health. In 2014, the group made international headlines by acquiring the iconic Makaibari estate in Darjeeling, the world’s first biodynamic tea garden. Luxmi has further expanded its global footprint through its Rwandan subsidiaries (Silverback Tea Company), which include the award-winning Gisovu and Pfunda estates, as well as the newly acquired Sorwathe Ltd in late 2024.

Modern Luxmi is pivotally shifting from a bulk producer to a premium retail brand. Under Managing Director Rudra Chatterjee, the company is aggressively expanding its D2C (Direct-to-Consumer) presence, opening luxury boutiques in major Indian airports like Bengaluru and Delhi. Furthermore, the group is diversifying into tea tourism; in February 2026, Luxmi signed a major agreement with Apeejay Surrendra Park Hotels to develop a 100-room premium hotel at the Chandmani Tea Estate in Siliguri. This evolution ensures that Luxmi remains not just a plantation owner, but a global lifestyle brand rooted in its 114-year legacy of quality and community upliftment.
