About - Apeejay Tea Limited (Apeejay Surrendra Group)

Apeejay Tea Limited, a cornerstone of the diversified Apeejay Surrendra Group, represents one of the oldest and most storied legacies in the Indian tea industry. The group’s involvement in tea began in the 1980s, but the heritage of its gardens dates back as far as 1864. For decades, Apeejay stood as the third-largest tea producer in India, managing a vast empire of 17 tea estates spread across approximately 50,000 acres in the fertile plains of Assam. This massive land bank allowed the company to produce nearly 25 million kg of premium tea annually at its peak, catering to both the high-volume domestic auction system and prestigious international clients like Harrods, Tetley, and Starbucks.

In recent years, the company has undergone a profound strategic transformation. As of early 2026, Apeejay Tea has made the monumental decision to exit the bulk tea segment, divesting its entire portfolio of 17 tea estates to reputable players like Dhunseri Tea. This move was primarily driven by a desire to deleverage the balance sheet and pivot toward a more brand-centric, asset-light model. By clearing significant debt through these sales, the company has refocused its energy on the FMCG and retail space, moving up the value chain from plantation owner to a global tea brand manager.

Today, the group’s tea interests are concentrated in its retail and packet tea brands, most notably the iconic British brand Typhoo, which it acquired in 2005. Furthermore, Apeejay continues to innovate through its popular Cha Bar chain—an integrated bookstore-and-tea-lounge concept—and its Flurys brand, which has expanded into premium beverages. While it no longer manages the vast acreage of the Assam valley, the Apeejay Surrendra Group remains a significant influence in the tea world, focusing on sustainability, ethical sourcing, and the “boutique” tea experience.
